What is β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyrate?

β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine, used as a dietary supplement to decrease sarcopenia and improve muscle strength. Elevated levels of this compound are found in several inherited disorders. It has been associated with potential health benefits. Mechanisms include activation of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and increased protein synthesis (1).
